Charlestown vies to increase role as place for biotech development

With plenty of office space, relatively affordable rent, accessible public transportation, and views of the Boston Harbor, Charlestown has a lot going for it as it recruits new tenant companies. Currently, four small companies are considering relocation to Charlestown, and recent move-ins include Dimagi, an international health care consulting start-up and Cogito Health Inc., a software company. Among reasons for choosing Charlestown, Cogito sites easy parking, the nearby Sullivan Square Orange Line MBTA station and a bus line to MIT, as well as low price compared to Longwood and South Boston.

Although there is some movement to Charlestown, experienced real estate brokers say that Cambridge maintains its hold as the center of the biotech industry. Charlestown has vacant spaces for companies that do and do not need lab space.
